I was meeting with a Private Equity promoter a few weeks ago and the talk was good for non-traditional entrepreneurs. Too many people are on safari scouting unicorns when there is herd of mustangs standing beside them.

Tell Us Which Companies Crushed It In Response to Security or Privacy Issues This Year

Companies suffering security breaches or being alerted of vulnerabilities are nothing new, and to be honest, their responses are usually dismal. So much so that when I started poking around for names of businesses that have handled issues well, the name that kept coming up was Buffer--even though that happened all the way back in 2013. (That's got to be about a decade in tech years.)

Worried About Windows 10 Phoning Home With Personal Data? Shut Down What You Share

With Microsoft's recent announcement that over 75 million installs are now out in the wild for Windows 10, it's obvious the company's plan is beginning to work. Microsoft has been on a mission with Windows 10, in an effort get as many users as possible migrated to their new OS and achieve such critical mass that the developer and ecosystem partner community comes running to build apps and products in support of the platform. In addition to significantly expanding the Windows 10 footprint, some have argued that Windows 10 is a massive data collection tool for Microsoft as well, cleverly disguised as experiential and usage model feedback, being transmitted to Redmond to help improve the product. Some users have even gone so far as to claim Windows 10 keylogs what you type and sends it back to Microsoft servers, with your machine ID in tow, every 30 minutes. Further still, it has been claimed that torrent users and tracker sites are being targeted by Microsoft (for pirated software) as well, and at least one of these sites have banned Windows 10 users altogether as a result.

Microsoft's Upcoming Lumia 950 and 950 XL Windows 10 Flagship Smartphones Pictured In Latest Leaks

With the successful launch of Windows 10 on the desktop out of the way, much of the attention focused on Microsoft has shifted to Windows 10 for Phones. At this point it has been nearly two years since truly new, flagship devices—packing cutting edge hardware—launched on Microsoft’s smartphone platform. In some industries, that’s not a very long time, but in the mobile space two years in an eternity. Consider that in roughly the same amount of time, Samsung has pushed out four iterations of its Galaxy S devices (the Galaxy S4, S5, S6, and S6 Edge+) and you’ll understand how strange it is for a company like Microsoft to not attack the high-end of the market with a consistent influx of halo devices. A number of low-end and mainstream Windows Phone-based devices have been released, but no high-end products.
