A Customer Service Week Question: Should You Think Of Your Employees As "Internal Customers"?

The articles and discussions for Customer Service Week that I've seen focus on “external customers”--you know, the people we used to simply call “customers.” But what about the people who work inside your company, those who, in a proximate way of speaking, you do your work for? The so-called “internal customers”-are they actually customers?
